How to remove mold from shower

Residential cleaning, but above all the cleaning of private homes, should include the removal of mold from the bathroom, in order to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment.

The presence of mold in the bathroom is a problem that many people have to deal with, whether it affects tiled surfaces or masonry walls. Fortunately, removing mold from the home is not an impossible task, even if it is not always easy.

Moisture is the main cause of mold generation, a poorly ventilated environment or a paint that is not breathable and poorly suited to the environment can cause the formation of mold, unhygienic and anti-aesthetic. They lurk in the corners and interstices between the tiles, near the shower or toilet or on the walls of the ceiling.

What causes mold in the shower?

Having mold in your home is extremely annoying, but in many cases it only takes a few strokes of sponge and natural products to remove it and a few simple precautions to prevent it from reforming. Mold usually appears in the wettest and least ventilated areas, so in the shower cubicle it is very easy for a minimum deposit of mold to occur spontaneously, especially in corners, in tile joints and in areas where moisture accumulates and are more difficult to reach during cleaning. When mold starts to form, it is important to remove it quickly, to prevent it from multiplying by colonising the shower enclosure.

Cleaning the mold

Finding yourself with mold in the shower cubicle is not an insurmountable problem. First of all, remove the mold from the walls and the shower tray with a damp cloth, scratching the surface slightly. This will eliminate the surface of pests. Now you need to prepare a bucket of water with a cup of sodium bicarbonate. The latter is an excellent natural detergent and disinfectant. Once prepared, this compound should be applied in areas where the mold is visible. Bicarbonate does not damage the shower tray, tiles or walls, either in glass or plastic. The bicarbonate must be left to act for about an hour, so that it has time to absorb and destroy the mold. After this period you can proceed to rinse. If there are still visible traces of mold, repeat the application.

Another method is using just half a litre of water to which 250 cc of vinegar and a glass of lemon juice are added to obtain a detergent effective in combating and eliminating mold. If the mold is present in large quantities, it is possible to add to the mixture a few tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate with a high whitening power and with a toothbrush with hard bristles pass between the joints of the tiles and where there is the blackening.

Clean the shower with vinegar

White vinegar is an all-natural product that is perfect for a wide range of household cleaning tasks, including sanitising the shower enclosure. Vinegar creates a moist environment that makes it difficult for mold to develop and is also perfect for removing mold that has already formed. To clean the mold in the shower enclosure, simply wipe it with a wet cloth in a solution of warm water and white vinegar. To permanently remove any deposits, it is advisable to scrape the walls or shower tray slightly with a non-abrasive cloth at the point where the mold has formed, so as to also remove any deposits attached to the shower cubicle. Once the entire shower enclosure has been cleaned, it is best to rinse it out to remove any vinegar residue. The shower box should then be dried, because the residual moisture is the best friend of the mold. Vinegar is also a good natural limescale remover, so it can also be used to remove limescale residues from the enclosure walls and shower head.

How to remove mold from bathroom walls?

To clean the walls you can simply formulate a mixture of water and bleach (or possibly hydrogen peroxide) and with a brush soaked pass the part to be treated and immediately dry the excess with a cloth of absorbent material.

This is an excellent method of cleaning private homes, oriented to the practice of DIY, while those involved in residential cleaning can use special products on the market, usually based on citric acid, bleach or vinegar, which usually require a laying time of a few minutes before their removal.

How do you remove mold from shower silicone? From the most aggressive to no-toxic solutions

It is not necessary to replace the old silicone when mould starts to form. In fact, as we have already mentioned, there are methods that can solve the problem by cleaning the area concerned. There are several effective remedies, let’s see together those most used.

Among the most used methods there is certainly the one in which the protagonist is ammonia. During this type of cleaning it is important to ventilate the environment, as this product has harmful effects. It is recommended to wear a respirator when you do not have the opportunity to ventilate the room. Now we can start preparing the cleaning solution by mixing the ingredients. Let’s pour water and ammonia equally into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the affected area and wait 5-10 minutes. Then we rub it with a toothbrush and, finally, we remove the residues with a cloth. If this first step has not eliminated the mold, let’s try it again. Alternatively, we can also use bleach.

As we have already revealed there are other non-toxic methods that can remove mold from the silicone. We can try to use 3% hydrogen peroxide, which we put in a spray bottle. We spray the substance on the silicone until it is well wet. Let it work for 10 minutes and then rub the surface with a sponge or brush. After finishing, we dry with a cloth.

Often for this type of cleaning is used vinegar, the white distilled. Let’s always put it in a spray bottle and wet the moldy area. Let’s wait an hour and then rub the area and rinse.

Finally, we also recommend using sodium bicarbonate and water. Pour 3 or 4 grams of bicarbonate into a spray bottle and add the water. Let’s shake the container well and then spray the mixture on the silicone. Rub immediately and then rinse with water.

So, what are you waiting for? Consider one of these methods to finally remove the mold that has been created on the silicone.

Preventing the formation of mold in the shower enclosure

The easiest way to remove mold from the shower enclosure is to prevent it from forming. To do this, the shower enclosure must be cleaned after each use. First of all, it is necessary to rinse out any soap or shampoo deposits, to prevent the formation of an unsightly yellowish patina, made up of dry soap, which will act as a nursery for mold. Since these fungi thrive in moisture, it is advisable to dry the box, paying attention to all areas where water can deposit. This can happen, for example, in the tile joints, in the corners of the shower tray or between the hinges of the opening. To allow residues to dry and moisture to escape, it would be better to leave the box open after each use. Always keeping the shower enclosure dry and ventilated will prevent the formation of mold. caulk

How to prevent the formation of mold in the bathroom

The first measure is to limit the stagnation of humidity: installing a suction fan or having the possibility of opening a window that ensures air circulation is already an important first step to reduce the generation of mold in the bathroom.

Another important measure is to pass a coat of paint specifically designed for the bathroom, with breathable characteristics.

It is also important to act daily to limit mold, drying the tiles in the shower or in the area near the washbasin, checking that there is no leakage of water even from the toilet. Cleaning the bathroom can therefore be the ideal way to prevent the appearance of mold stains on the wall and tiles.

Spray products for the prevention of mold are also available on the market and must be sprayed on the tiles so that they can create a protective and long-lasting patina that acts as a water-repellent.

A small trick to eliminate and prevent the formation of mold, also used by residential cleaning companies is to observe if there are micro-cracks in the joints of the tiles: there the water penetrates, stagnates and creates the humidity necessary to bring the mold to the surface. The help of a special grout can help to close the crack and seal the joint, preventing the absorption of water.
